5 things they don't tell you in school about reading:

“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.” – J.K. Rowling

Only seems fitting to quote my favorite book series author, thank you Harry Potter.

3 of my fav. personal development books.

Let's take a trip down memory lane to High School, heck why not date it back to Elementary. Where when it came to #reading, I literally dreaded every thought of it. I remember in High School we did the unit on poetry, and all I could think was, "What is this person saying?!" I know I am not the only one here LOL.

I will also say that I was not the only one who loathed the thought of picking up a book at that age. After teaching fifth grade for years, I could see the same looks on my students' faces. "Okay class, open to page____ and let's read aloud." You will never see so many heads be put down so quickly. Another thing I learned too for those teaching, don't be the teacher that says, "Pick your own book". That right there while my reasons were good led to more Captain Underpants essays than one needs to experience in their life.

In school reading is such a big staple, but we're never really told why.. except it's good for you / you need to pass STAAR. (Good old state testing). If you actually dug a little deeper though there are some MAJOR benefits to reading daily.

  • Mental stimulation: We all live on our phones. Reading can actually slow Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

  • Reduces stress: By "losing myself" in books, I have actually gone to bed happier.

  • Knowledge: You're gaining something from reading.

  • Improved focus / concentration: ADHD watch out. Try reading 15 min before work, and see just how your focus improves on the task at hand.

  • Creates ability to be empathetic: You're able to become more aware / alert of others feelings.

It wasn't until I started spending every weekend or taking weekly trips with my grams that I found a love for reading. Perhaps it was because I finally didn't have to read? No longer was I in college or high school, therefore no one could technically tell me what / when to read. I would spend hours with my grandma, and hear all about the series of books she was reading. (Let me clarify too, my grams told me about 50 Shades of Grey). So while what I read the first year I got into reading vs. now has completely changed it was hearing her tell the story that I was craving.

I started small I aimed for 20 min x day at least three times a week. This woman literally had nothing to do so she could finish 2-3 books in a day easily. As I started though, 3 days became 4, which in turn led to a daily habit. The content focus also shifted LOL. We went from steamy why is my romance life not like this to personal development, but hey that's okay.

As of lately, I have now been reading almost 30 min. daily and it's safe to say the impact on my life has only grown from it. There's more than just those 5 benefits listed that have occurred for me, however that alone should be enough to make anyone want to give reading another go round.

Here are my top personal development books as of lately:

  1. Girl Was Your Face

  2. Chase the Lion

  3. Unfu*k Yourself

  4. Wake the f#ck Up

  5. Pillow Thoughts

  6. Big Magic

  7. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

  8. A Beautiful Composition of Broken

  9. Milk and Honey

  10. Whiskey Words and a Shovel

  11. You Are a Badass (ALL her novels)

Those are just a small list of ones I have flown through. My goal lately is to finish 1-2 #books x month. I am already starting my list of pre orders.
